Indie Game Marketing

Now that you have created your great Indie game it's time to market it.
Traditional developers and publishers are not limited to certain promotions due to their opulent budgets, but this doesn't mean you can't use tried and true methods along with guerrilla marketing to spread word of your game. First thing you must do is identify your target market. Is your game downloadable, browser based, or mobile? Can my game be used as a Facebook application? Regardless you will want a website / landing page. You can create one using Wordpress or Blogger, but chances are you can code a website if you made a video game.
A forum is a necessity to allow players to talk about your game, as well as Media in the form of screenshots and videos. You will want to gain more Search Engine visitors to find people actively seeking related games. If your game is a puzzle game you will want to optimize your title for "Name of Your Game" - Free (if free) puzzle online game.
Too many times webmasters make the mistake of just the name.
Be descriptive in exactly what your game entails - imagine you were searching for it without knowing its existence.

To gain more visitors you will need back links.

Submit to directories, social bookmarking, social networks, and forge relationships within the game community.
Most important is well written, news worthy press release about your game.

Even if it's not a game changer, find an angle to catch people's attention and run with it (i.e. Puzzle Game So Difficult Man Threatens Developer). The more outrageous the better. There are dozens of free press release websites, as well as paid ones.
You can even submit the press release to social sharing sites.
Video and Media is a must these days. Put all of your videos on YouTube and the other video sharing websites.

Post your media to Flickr and other image sharing services. Just remember the internet itself is "fake" so it does not necessarily know how big or small you are.
Fake it until you make it.

Sweat equity can help promote your game if you're willing to put in the work to market it.
